Strategy & Innovation

The Strategy & Innovation Division leads the development, coordination, and implementation of strategic initiatives throughout the school district. Our three major system priorities are the development and monitoring of the Strategic Plan, Redefining Our Schools, and Systemic Project & Process Improvement. The division is comprised of the six departments below.

Athletics & Student Activities

This department facilitates many programs and activities that student complete the student experience. The specific curricular and extra-curricular programs and activities supported by the department are outlined below.

  • Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA): 24 sports programs offered in 34 schools (29 District high schools, 3 private schools, and 2 charter schools)
  • Middle School Athletic Association (MSAA): 8 sports programs offered in 59 middle schools and charter schools
  • Student Activities: Student Government, Honor Society, Future Educators of America, Student Leadership Camps, Countywide Student Leadership Awards Ceremonies
  • JROTC: Nation’s largest program (offered in 29 high schools consisting of all branches of service), 2 Entrepreneur and Leadership Academies (Boyd Anderson HS and Hollywood Hills HS)
  • Other Responsibilities: Graduations, Student Enrichment Though the Arts (SEAS)

Before & After School Child Care

The department oversees the quality of before and after school programs that operate in the school district. The staff work to ensure the programs provide a supervised learning and play environment and offer a wide variety of age-appropriate activities. In addition to before and after school programs, summer camps and 21st Century Community Learning Centers are administered through the department.

Charter Schools Management/Support

Charter schools are independent public schools of choice that hire their own teachers, design their own academic programs, and control their own finances. They have more flexibility to innovate and provide a unique curriculum, while remaining accountable for advancing student achievement. Currently, the department monitors compliance for 86 charter schools. Premium services are provided to charter schools through the Venture Design arm of the department.

Demographics & Enrollment Planning

Demographics & Enrollment Planning (DEP) works to facilitate near- and long-range organizational decision-making for the optimization of educational facility usage and resource allocation. Through collaboration with BCPS leadership, departments, schools, and external stakeholders, DEP provides critical data and analysis to support the Broward County Public School Strategic Plan. DEP also manages critical processes required by statute to set school attendance areas and usage each year, as well as the decennial, census-driven redistricting process to realign school board member districts.

Magnet & Innovative Programs

Magnet Programs offer educational choices in Broward County Public Schools. While similar courses and programs may be available in comprehensive schools, Magnet programs attract students by offering unique opportunities for in-depth experiences and study in specific areas of interest. Each Magnet program emphasizes a specialized theme. Our goal is to create educational interests, celebrate cultural and ethnic diversity, and foster student achievement.
Innovative Programs are schools that provide unique or specialized thematic instruction. If an innovative program is offered at a student's home boundary school, contact the school to inquire about participation. Innovative programs support unique or thematic instruction within matriculating feeder patterns.

Strategic Initiative Management

The Office of Strategic Initiative Management (SIM) plays a vital role by supporting the District-wide goal of maximizing student outcomes directly through strategic plan execution. The major initiatives are the Strategic Plan, Performance Management, Process Improvement, and Enterprise Project Management. This department is dedicated to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and driving positive change throughout the District.
