• Facial Coverings (Mask) Exceptions Under SBBC Policy 2170

Broward County Public Schools requires a facial covering to be worn while in district facilities. This requirement is outlined in School Board of Broward County (SBBC) Policy 2170 (Face Coverings). Currently, the policy does not provide an “opt-out” option from the requirement to wear a facial covering.

The policy does provide for exceptions to the requirement to wear a facial covering for students:

    1. With a Student with Disability (SWD) designation AND have the exception included in their Individual Education Plan (IEP), OR
    2. With an exisiting Section 504 Plan AND have the need for a facial covering exception included in their Section 504 Plan.

Process for consideration of a request for a facial covering exemption

For students who currently have an IEP or 504 Plan

If your child currently has an IEP or 504 Plan AND has a potentially qualifying medical, psychological, or other condition which would necessitate an exception from the requirement to wear a facial covering, then you should contact the respective ESE Specialist or the 504 Liaison for your child’s school to convene a committee meeting for consideration.

A student who currently has an approved IEP or 504 Plan who brings signed documentation from a licensed medical professional for a mask exception, will be allowed the exception until the formal meeting for consideration of the documented request for a facial covering exception.  A parent or guardian should provide a copy of the documentation from the licensed medical professional to the principal, Exceptional Student Education Coordinator, or 504 Liaison.

Documentation provided in support of eligibility for a mask exception must clearly state that the student requires an exception from the expectation that the student wear a facial covering to mitigate the spread the COVID-19. The documentation must clearly provide the name of the licensed medical professional and their contact information.

For students who currently do not have an existing IEP or 504 Plan

If your child does not currently have either of these programmatic designations and you believe that they should be evaluated for eligibility, then please contact the respective ESE Specialist or the 504 Liaison for your child’s school to initiate the evaluation process.  Information on Section 504 eligibility and processes in BCPS can be found at: https://www.browardschools.com/ese-support.  Information on Student with Disability services eligibility can be found from the Florida Department of Education at:  https://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/7674/urlt/0064540-eseparent.pdf.

A student who does not currently have an approved IEP or 504 Plan who brings signed documentation from a licensed medical professional for a mask exception, will NOT be allowed the exception until the formal evaluation for eligibility for a 504 for consideration of the documented request for a facial covering exception.  Schools have been asked to expedite the process for consideration of these applications.

Again, please contact your child’s school to convene or initiate consideration for an exception to the required face mask policy.  Contact information for schools can be found here.
