The Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) offers free basic tax return preparation by qualified volunteers. For 50 years, the VITA Program has helped people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers prepare their own tax returns. The IRS created and has managed this program to provide underserviced communities with free tax preparation services and tax counselling.
In the spring of 2022, Sheridan Technical High School was the first school in Broward County to partner with the IRS/VITA program. This is beneficial to students who wish to work or gain general knowledge of business and finance. This opening also grants students the opportunity to serve their community while earning community service hours. To volunteer, students must first certify for the required VITA certifications. There are many positions students can volunteer for, including a greeter, a tax return preparer, tax return reviewer, and many more.
