Digital 5 Project (D5)
We are excited that Parkside Elementary is participating in the District’s D5 (Digital 5) Project. Thanks to our SMART bond initiative, we also have a one-to-one laptop ratio for students in grades 2 through 5. However, the 5th graders have the unique option of taking their computers home. Please read on for more details.
The D5 Project provides each fifth grader with a Lenovo ThinkPad 11e for use in school (and eventually at home) throughout the school year. All of Parkside’s fifth grade teachers have attended training on how to effectively assist and guide their students in the use of computers to support and enrich their learning experiences. In addition, all 4th, 3rd, and 2nd graders have their own school laptop that they leave at school. Kindergarten and 1st grade students utilize shared classroom computers.
We encourage you to visit the Digital 5 website to learn more about the project.
Before the students were able use to their laptops in class, they were provided with expectations on the proper use and care of the laptops assigned to them.
Rules – Student use of Laptops
Prior to being able to bring their laptop home, parents will be required to attend a meeting at the school. During this meeting additional information will be provided about the program, as well as discussion of the expectations to allow students to bring their laptop home. At the meeting, students and parents will be required to sign a property pass as well as an agreement regarding the expectations for use of the laptop at home.
It is important to note that attendance at this meeting will be mandatory in order for students to bring the laptop home. Please watch the school calendar as well as for notices regarding this meeting. In order to accommodate our parents there will be a choice of days and times to attend.
