Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Pamela Van Horn, B.S.Ed., M.Ed.
I am so blessed and pleased to be serving my 15th year at Plantation Middle School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP). This school is a family of caring, unique, and wonderful individuals. I count myself blessed each day I can walk into this building to work with the students, staff, and parents.
While at Plantation Middle, I have taught all core subjects, in all grades and levels, including IB, Gifted, and Special Education. This is my fourth full year as the IB MYP Magnet Coordinator as well as the International Business, Entrepreneurial, Language, and Leadership Academy (IBELLA) Coordinator. I have implemented several IB policies such as community service requirements, the 8th Grade Community Project, honesty policy, and Learner Profile focus traits for each month, just to name a few.
In less than one year as Magnet Coordinator, Plantation Middle School was named a 2017 National Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. This nationally recognized award is the second highest award of recognition and was awarded to Plantation Middle again in 2018, and again in 2019!
In 2017, under the leadership and direction of our Head of School, Dr. Sherri N. Wilson, determined to bring Mandarin Chinese language to our students without a budget to do so, asked me to apply for a Grant she discovered for a fully funded Mandarin Chinese Teacher from the United States State Department, Teachers of Critical Languages Program. In 2018, Plantation Middle was the first school in BCPS to ever receive such a Grant! We welcomed Ms Zhao Xin from China to teach Mandarin Chinese to our students for the 2018-2019 school year. I applied again for the Grant and in 2019-2020, Plantation Middle was again selected for this wonderful Grant. We now welcome Ms Huang Can from China who is teaching Chinese I and Chinese II for high school credits to our students!
Our school has been fortunate enough to receive these wonderful grants and awards, and I have been blessed as a successful grants and awards writer, but it is only because of the phenomenal work that our administration, teachers, and students do every day that allows me the ability to tell our story.
I strive daily to build positive relationships with students, parents and community members. I welcome any feedback you might offer. Please call or email at any time with suggestions or concerns, as I am here to serve.
