South Plantation High School’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program has been serving students across Broward County since 2002. The program aims to bring students from across the county to study the many different branches of science. This competitive program receives more qualified applicants than seats available. Students are then chosen through a random selection process. As a part of the program, students learn environmental stewardship and everglades preservation through service learning, field trips, and rigorous science classes. After the completion of the 4-year program, students graduate with a certificate of achievement, a green cord, and a gold medallion recognizing a successful research symposium project.
The program has been recognized by Magnet Schools of America as a national School of Excellence in 2013, and School of Distinction in 2015, 2011, 2009, and 2008. After a 3-year research study, Metis Associates named South Plantation the top magnet high school in all of Broward County in 2014. In 2014-2015 we had the top environmental student and teacher of the year in Broward County, and in 2015-2016 we again had the top environmental student of the year.
Students also have the chance to excel outside the classroom in various science-based competitions. These include the Science and Engineering Fair, NASA’s Astronaut Challenge, Robotics and ROV competitions, the Plywood Regatta, and Drone competitions, in which students often find success. The Fairchild Challenge Team has been the overall winner of the Challenge for 10 consecutive years. The Solar Knights have also seen success nationally winning the National Solar Car Challenge.
The program is widely known for its success and the benefits it brings its students, with an academically rigorous curriculum, competitive clubs, friendly culture, and college preparatory STEM focused learning. Students will surely be prepared for college and careers.
