BCPS Students Shine in National Merit Scholarship Competition

BCPS Announces 2024 National Merit Scholarship Winners Banner

Seven Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) seniors were awarded the prestigious National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced. Additionally, Cypress Bay High School senior Marcela Lopez was honored with a corporate-sponsored National Merit PepsiCo Foundation Scholarship.

Congratulations to the following BCPS National Merit Scholarship winners (pictured above left to right).

  • Patrick Fung, McFatter Technical High School (National Merit $2,500 Scholarship)
  • Ingrid J. Groose, Flanagan High School (National Merit $2,500 Scholarship)
  • Arya Gujarathi, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (National Merit $2,500 Scholarship)
  • Badrinath Konidala, Cypress Bay High School (National Merit $2,500 Scholarship)
  • Marcela Lopez, Cypress Bay High School (Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarship)
  • Marcos S. Ortega, West Broward High School (National Merit $2,500 Scholarship)
  • Haoran Shi, West Broward High School (National Merit $2,500 Scholarship)

National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners represent the finalists in each state who demonstrated the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in challenging college coursework. These scholarships can be used at any regionally accredited college or university in the United States.

Corporate-sponsored scholarships are offered to finalists who meet the specific criteria of the sponsoring organization.

From an initial pool of semifinalists, over 15,000 students met the rigorous academic standards and other requirements to advance to the final state. The majority of scholarships awarded annually are sponsored by approximately 320 independent corporations and colleges.
