BCPS Celebrates 23rd Annual Kids and Staff of Character Awards Ceremony

Wednesday, May 17, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) proudly presents the 23rd Annual Kids and Staff of Character Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Amaturo Theater.  The event – sponsored by the Hanley Foundation and organized by the District’s Equity, Diversity and School Climate Department – celebrates students and staff for being outstanding examples of the eight District-adopted core character traits: cooperation, responsibility, citizenship, kindness, respect, honesty, self-control and tolerance.

“The Kids and Staff of Character Awards go beyond academics in recognizing individuals who go out of their way to help each other and to support the community,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean Smiley. “From demonstrating the impact of kindness and respect to showing tolerance and self-control when faced with a challenging situation, we are proud of each recipient for doing the right thing for the right reason.”

The District’s core character traits help promote positive behavior and create a safer and more respectful learning environment for students. The eight traits are infused into the school environment through class curriculum and school-related activities. One trait is highlighted each month – from September through April – with a supporting curriculum and a family newsletter that contains lessons, videos and related activities.

Schools across the District nominated students and staff who embody and exemplify the core traits throughout the year. Representatives from community organizations and District employees helped select the 50 elementary school, middle school and high school students being honored as well as the 20 BCPS employees being recognized.

Media are invited to cover this event.
