Superintendent Welcomes Students to School Campuses During First Day of Face-to-Face eLearning
Nearly seven months after Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) was forced to close schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the District begins its phased reopening for face-to-face eLearning by welcoming almost 20,000 students – from pre-K to second grade and exceptional student education from all grade levels – onto school campuses.
As outlined in the District’s Optional Innovative Plan, families were offered the option for their students to receive eLearning instruction at home or at their school campus. Through a parent survey and direct requests to schools, 1,531 pre-K parents opted for on-campus learning for their child, as well as parents of 4,262 kindergarteners, 4,311 first graders and 4,252 second graders. Additionally, the District will welcome approximately 5,500 students with disabilities in all other grade levels.
“Our District staff has made a tremendous effort to prepare our schools for students with all the measures necessary to make reopening our campuses as safe as possible,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We’re happy to offer this face-to-face option for parents, and we’re excited to see our students back in the classroom.”
Superintendent Runcie will visit several schools to welcome students, parents, teachers and staff. He will begin his day at the Central Area Transportation Terminal in Oakland Park as school bus operators prepare to meet the first wave of student bus riders of the 2020/21 school year. Following the school visits, the day will conclude with a press conference at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center.
