Hundreds of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students and staff from James S. Rickards Middle School received a warm welcome to Broward College - their new school campus for the remainder of the 2020/21 school year. Consistent with the long-standing partnership between BCPS and Broward College, the District was greeted by the kindness and generosity of Broward College’s leadership and staff, who worked quickly to accommodate the Rickards Middle community on their North Campus, in Coconut Creek, following a structural failure of the roof over the media center at the school on March 5, 2021.
“I’m grateful for our partnership and the cooperation of Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, who – without hesitation – allowed us to realize this opportunity for our students,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “The result of the responsiveness and flexibility of his staff is the ability to continue offering an in-person experience to our school community.”
Through this collaboration, Broward College can accommodate up to approximately 400 Rickards Middle students, as well as staff, through June 2021, without impacting the college’s North Campus students who are attending classes on campus. Arrangements have been made for continuity of services and programs for the Rickards Middle community at this new location, including transportation, food and nutrition, academic support, mental health and wellness and after school programs.
“BCPS is a valued partner, and as an institution committed to supporting our community's needs, we are also invested in our children's welfare,” said Dr. Sunem Beaton-Garcia, Broward College North Campus President. “This partnership also provides a unique opportunity. We know when young students set foot on our campus and get a glimpse of life at Broward College, it not only motivates them to do well in school but allows them to begin to imagine a future that includes higher education and a wider variety of career opportunities."
BCPS Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness and Broward College Safety and Security Department are coordinating efforts and are committed to ensuring safety the needs of students of both groups are met. The District’s partnerships with Broward College also include dual enrollment, College Academy, recruitment, college fairs, and other opportunities to increase access to post-secondary education to students across Broward County.
