BLU’S CORNER: Making An Off-Season Impression
By Larry Blustein
While our many BCAA athletes get it done locally – at camps, combines, and 7-on-7 events – many of them take their talented act on the road as well. Last weekend the destination was Winter Garden High School – to the west of Orlando – for another impressive showcase.
With cameras rolling and eyes peeled on the action, the Under Armour Underclassman event was the perfect way to jump into the spotlight – not just in Florida, but nationally as well.
With competition being the name of the game, athletes from all over Broward County had the chance to make a lasting impression – and they with several eyes on them throughout, the four-hour ride was well worth it.
MAJOR TALENT ON HAND
As the event showcased some major Florida high school stars, it also gave many of our local athletes a true forum as players such as Lakeland Lake Gibson Class of 2022 athlete Sam McCall (FSU commitment), Class of 2023 running back Richard Young (Lehigh), West Orange High’s 6-5 Class of 2022 receiver Jayden Gibson, Ocoee defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, Orlando Boone offensive lineman Leyton Nelson as well as Lakeland Kathleen RB Jordan Gant, and Tampa Carrollwood Day lineman Brandon Cleveland, a one-time University of Miami commitment, it was also a chance for players from Hallandale, Deerfield Beach, Dillard, and St. Thomas Aquinas to put their name in the mix.
Speaking of Hallandale, the Chargers are indeed loaded up – with a number of prospects heading to the central Florida area with assistant coach Junior Rosegreen helping to showcase prospects such as defensive backs Jaylin Marshall, Edric Weldon, Justin Doll, and Tiwan McCloud – as well as talented defensive lineman Justin Wallace.
FSU Class of 2022 receiver commit Devaughn Mortimer from Dillard was showcasing his many skills along with teammates D’mon Brinson (DB) and impressive Class of 2024 standout defensive back Antoine Jackson.
Deerfield Beach also brought quite a group to the event – including the Class of 2024 stars Tastean Reddicks (WR), Joshua Lloyd (DL), and quarterback Michael Merdinger. Class of 2023 tight end/receiver Marcus Williams and defensive back Howard Harlem were also on hand for the Bucks.
