West Broward High School Student Honored as Superintendent’s JROTC Cadet of the Year
June 9, 2020
Congratulations to Cadet Colonel Taylor Pittman, from West Broward High School, for being honored as Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Superintendent’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadet of the Year for 2019/20 school year.
During a virtual ceremony held on May 22, School Board Chair Donna Korn and Superintendent Robert W. Runcie presented the top award and recognized 29 additional cadets, who represented their respective schools in competing for the top honor and were officially designated as Broward County’s Outstanding Cadets of the Year. Among them were runner-up Cadet Adam Cohen from Everglades High School and Distinguished Cadets Alberto Sanchez from Coral Springs High School, Colin Beadle from Pompano Beach High School, Lincoln Le from Monarch High School, Ashfi Fakir from Deerfield Beach High School, Leann Kohler from South Broward High School and Hannah Sarver from Cooper City High School. The top eight finishers received scholarships totaling $10,000.
Additionally, in a first-time special presentation during the ceremony, GEICO-Plantation insurance agent Roxanne Jackson awarded BCPS a $10,000 donation in support of Junior ROTC programs at 10 schools.
The cadets recognized during the fifth annual award ceremony were evaluated on their academic performance, demonstrated leadership, community service and school involvement, as well as their participation in the Junior ROTC program. The 46-year-partnership between the United States Department of Defense and the School Board of Broward County is proudly celebrating the participation of more than 100,000 Junior ROTC Cadets to-date, making BCPS the largest school district in the nation with Junior ROTC programs in every traditional high school.
“Junior ROTC programs have the mission of motivating young students to become better citizens,” said Lt. Col. Kenneth Green, Junior ROTC and Military Programs Coordinator. “This year’s awardees are a great representation of the success of that mission in Broward County, and we are proud of them. Congratulations to all our outstanding cadets.”
