Amazon Awards Two BCPS Seniors $40,000 Future Engineer Scholarships and Honors Nova Middle School Teacher as Teacher of the Year
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates two high school seniors for earning $40,000 college scholarships from Amazon as part of the company’s Future Engineer Scholarship program. The students – Alanis Rivera-Narvaez at Charles W. Flanagan High School and Channing Gaddy at Western High School – are among 250 students in the nation awarded scholarships by the company in 2022. Both students are studying computer science.
Amazon selects recipients for its Future Engineer Scholarship program based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, community involvement, work experience, future goals and financial need. The students also receive a paid internship at Amazon after their freshman year of college to gain hands-on, practical work experience with mentorship from company leaders.
Amazon says its Future Engineer scholarship program aims to bridge the gap between interested students and access to computer science courses and opportunities.
In addition, Amazon named Nova Middle School computer science teacher Wanda Jones one of its Future Engineer Teachers of the Year. Jones is one of only 10 educators in the nation to be selected for the honor. The award recognizes teachers who promote diversity and encourage students to pursue careers in computer science and robotics. For being named a Future Engineer Teacher of the Year, Jones received $5,000 and Nova Middle received a $25,000 donation to support students’ education in computer science and STEM.
