BCPS Students Participate in Rally to the Tally for New Floridians
December 10 – 13, 2024
Approximately 150 newly arrived immigrants and English Language Learners, who are Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) high school students, will take part in Rally to the Tally for New Floridians from December 10 – 13, 2024. This four-day field trip provides students the opportunity to see first-hand the legislative system at work. Students will visit the state capital and tour Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida.
Participating students represent countries in the Caribbean; Central, North and South Americas; and Europe. The initiative is designed to bring the democratic process alive for students by providing opportunities to learn the history and government of the state of Florida. Students will learn about the state and federal government, meet state agency officials and prepare a Youth Legislative Agenda to present at the Capitol to members of the House and Senate. Activities will foster confidence for active citizenship and raise awareness of the American cultural values placed on education and community involvement.
Rally to the Tally for New Floridians is organized by the BCPS Bilingual-ESOL Department in collaboration with the Close-Up Foundation and funded by Title III, Part A; Enhanced Opportunities for Recently Arrived Immigrant Children; and Youth Grant. Close-Up Foundation, Washington, D.C., and BCPS Bilingual/ESOL Department are sponsors of the event.
Media note: On Tuesday, December 10, busses will depart from various locations from 4:30 – 6 a.m. Please contact our office if you would like to cover the departure.
