More than 40 BCPS Students Participate in Rally to Tally
With their legislative initiatives in hand, 47 Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students are heading to Tallahassee on March 13 to participate in Rally to Tally, a three-day field trip to the state capitol, where they get to experience Florida government at work during the 2023 regular legislative session. Students representing high schools from across the District will be joined by Broward County School Board members.
“For many of our students, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand,” said BCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean C. Smiley. “I’m excited for them to engage with legislators on real issues that have an impact on public education.”
During the 60-day legislative session, groups and organizations from around the state head to Tallahassee to advocate for their legislative initiatives. The event, organized by the BCPS Legislative Affairs Department, gives students an opportunity to meet with legislators and share their ideas on issues that matter to them. Students, who are in grades 10 through 12, will tour the Florida Capitol and Supreme Court, meet with elected officials and sit in on legislative committee discussions. The students are divided into groups according to their School Board member districts, and each group shares its legislative initiatives with legislators.
Each BCPS high school selected student candidates to apply to participate in Rally to Tally. The Legislative Affairs Department then reviewed the applications in choosing the participating students.
