BCPS Hosts 2023 Senior Send-Off Drive-through Event for High School Seniors Experiencing Housing Instability

BCPS Hosts 2023 Senior Send-Off Drive-through Event
for High School Seniors Experiencing Housing Instability

WHO:
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Homeless Education Assistance Resource Team (HEART)

WHAT:
More than 100 eligible graduating seniors from the Class of 2023, who receive services from HEART, participate in a celebration where they are equipped with dorm room essentials as they embark on their post-secondary education or military journey.

WHY:
As seniors prepare for the next stage in their education, HEART teamed up with the Broward Education Foundation; Destination Dorm; Children’s Services Council of Broward County; The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation; Soles4Souls 4Every Kid initiative; UNCS (United National Consumer Suppliers); Immanuel Temple Church (a ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church); Superior Text; Broward Teachers Union; Florida Panthers; Broward College; HANDY HOMES, Inc.; and the BCPS Benefits, Student Services, and Equity, Diversity & School Climate Departments to ensure these students have what they need to make their dorm rooms and living quarters feel more like home. Each student receives dorm room necessities – such as a comforter, pillows, bed sheets, towels, shower basics, storage drawers, a standing lamp and other useful items – in addition to a new laptop computer and printer, a gift card, inspirational books and a congratulatory letter from BCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Earlean Smiley.
HEART provides continuous support to thousands of BCPS students experiencing homelessness, with the goal of removing the barriers that prevent them from enrolling, attending and succeeding in school.
