Dolphin Debate Team Takes Trophies

In the first tournament of the year, the 8th graders in Ms. Gaspard's high school credit class along with a few talented 6th and 7th graders competed against over 20 other middle schools in 11 different events. Our dolphins were victorious, with 16 students placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, and 6 of them earning medals🏆:

Original Oratory [memorized essay]: Kayla Celeste (6th grade) topic on teachers' pay; Chelsea Romeus (8th grade) topic on natural hair beauty; and Simya Worthy (6th grade) topic on police brutality-- each placed 3rd in one round;

Extemporaneous Speaking [unprepared speeches about "the US Supreme Court" and "International Trade"]: Demonte Henderson (7th) 3rd place - both rounds; James Brown (6th) 2nd place - both rounds🏆;

Impromptu Speaking [unprepared speeches  about "Fall" and "Famous Poets"]: Ronide Placius (8th) 3rd place - round 2; Eric Olivera (8th) 2nd place - round 2; Neveah Robinson (8th) 1st place - both rounds/ and 1st place overall🏆;

Poetry Interpretation [perform memorized poem]: Quacian Dennis (8th) 3rd place - round 2; Alyssa Pedroza (8th) 2nd place overall🏆; and Danica Pascal (8th) 1st place overall🏆;
Duo Interpretation [acting out the script of "Parent Trap"]: Savannah Williams (8th) and Beavion Green (8th) 1st place - round 1;
Public Forum Debate [Topic: The United States should accede to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea without reservations.]: Charnica Faustin (8th) and Kina Smith (8th) won round 1;

Policy Debate [Topic: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States]: Angelina Celestin (6th) and Landy Joseph (6th) won both rounds🏆🏆!

Please congratulate these students when you see them. They worked incredibly hard to prepare in a short amount of time and did not let us down!
