Free Summer Camps Highlight District’s Focus on Reimagining Middle Grades Learning
Hundreds of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Students, Teachers and Staff
From building robots to musical performances, debate exhibitions and creative artwork, students are preparing to showcase the skills they learned during the District’s free Applied Learning Institute (ALIgn) Summer Camp.
The showcase events take place Thursday, July 25, 2019, and are the culminating activities from the two-week summer camps, which begin on Monday, July 15. In all, nearly 900 BCPS students entering grades six through nine in the 2019/20 school year are participating in the camps. Students are exploring programs in art, debate, music, and STEM+Computer Science (CS), and have opportunities to continue with these areas of interest through electives and courses in the upcoming school year.
The summer camps are funded through the School is Cool grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, matched by BCPS, and support the District’s strategic focus on reimagining middle grades learning. The goal is to increase students’ experiences and engagement in elective programs with the intent of students becoming part of an inclusive elective community aligned to student interests, while enhancing academic support through project-based learning and ultimately affording a potential career path in life.
Showcase events take place on Thursday, July 25, at 2 p.m., at each school camp listed below:
Apollo Middle School
Fort Lauderdale High School
New Renaissance Middle School
Parkway Middle School
Piper High School
