Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) celebrates the 10th annual Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week, September 20 – 27, 2019. This year’s theme “Climate Action for Peace" is a call to action to build resilience in the community, adopt a non-violent approach to problem solving, and environmentally-friendly practices that will allow us to live in peace with our climate. Join BCPS in promoting peace, and a shift toward a cleaner, safer and greener future. The District is proud to partner with the United Way of Broward County and the Children’s Services Council of Broward County.

As part of Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week, participating District schools have the chance to win a Peace Pole, which serves as a visual reminder of the importance of peace within a community. The pole also reminds students to speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony throughout the school year.

Following are a few of the many activities taking place across the District:

  • International Peace Day and Choose Peace Across Broward Day, “End Mean to Earth
Students and staff are encouraged to wear green on Friday, September 20, for action on climate change education, to preserve all living organisms and human life on earth.
  • A Minute of Silence for a Moment of Peace
At noon on Friday, September 20, students and staff will  join participants across the world to pray for, meditate on and envision peace. The goal is to create a “peace wave” as a shared act of peace building.
  • Peace Pole Ceremony at Hollywood Hills High School
At 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24, students will plant a Peace Pole at Hollywood Hills High School, located at 5400 Stirling Road, Hollywood 33021.
  • Starbucks Coffee Cup Peace Sleeves
Local Starbucks locations support BCPS students in their effort to decorate thousands of coffee cup sleeves with peace  symbols, slogans and messages. Starbucks Corporation has  supported this effort over the years and local Starbucks will hand out the sleeves to customers during Peace Week.
  • Chalk4Peace and Chalk4ClimateChange Awareness
Allows students to express messages of inspiration and visions using sidewalk chalk art.
  • Imagine Peace Wish Tree
All week, BCPS students will create Peace Wishes for their “Imagine Peace Wish Tree.”  The wishes will be sent to the “Imagine Peace Tower” in Reykjavik, Iceland, and added to the 1,000,000 Peace Wishes from around the world that are buried in the wishing well of the tower. The tower was created in memory of John Lennon and communicates awareness to the whole world that peace and love are what connects all lives on earth
  • “Choose Peace Poster Contest”
An annual contest allowing young illustrators and graphic designers to express their visions of peace.

In addition, five BCPS students are being honored for winning the “Choose Peace/Stop Violence” poster. Congratulations to: Gabrielle Anderson and Isabella Cubas, North Andrews Gardens Elementary School, Patiera Thomas and Grace Shoukry, Coral Springs Middle School, and Julie Ayala, Hollywood Hills High School, their posters are featured above.
