Yakari Reed Is the winner of December 2019 " Do The Right Thing " Award

It’s time to recognize Yakari Reed who was nominated by Assistant Principal Synithia Crawford from Dave Thomas Educational Center.

Yakari became aware of an incident that occurred between two students from Dave Thomas the previous day.  One of the students involved was seen in an embarrassing video that was spread through social media.  Due to the embarrassing video, the student made a video of himself that afternoon holding a knife and he made a statement that implied that he was going to hurt himself.  When Yakari saw the concerning video she knew she had to take action to make sure he didn’t hurt himself and she immediately reported it to the School Resource Officer Fitzpatrick as soon as she got to school.  As a result of her actions, the student was able to get the help he needed to ensure he didn’t hurt himself.

Yakari has doing the right thing in her blood.  He grandmother is the infamous “Big Mama” who donates hundreds of turkeys for Thanksgiving in Broward County and Yakari has been by her side helping out.

Yakari has done great at Dave Thomas.  She has been involved in the school by being the President of the Crime Watch Club last year and this year she is the President of the Gay Straight Alliance on campus.  Her mother is very happy to report that Yakari’s grades have drastically improved and she is graduating in June.  She loves to work with kids and her plans are to go to school for Early Childhood Education so that she can continue with her passion.

It is for these reasons that Yakari has been selected as one of this month’s winners for Doing The Right Thing.
