Statement Regarding Court Hearing on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Tragedy Lawsuits
January 8, 2020
The attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, was a horrible tragedy and continues to have a tremendous impact on our entire community. Today, the court heard the District’s response to the allegations made against it in a number of lawsuits filed by the families of the victims. The District unwaveringly recognizes its duty to those on its campuses and remains focused on learning from this tragedy while continuing to improve safety and security for all students, faculty, staff and visitors. However, the District also maintains that many of the allegations set forth in these lawsuits go far beyond the bounds of Florida law and attempt to place additional duties and responsibilities on the District that are not recognized or supported by legal precedent. Accordingly, the District has asked the court to apply those limitations in order to properly narrow the issues in the lawsuits to those claims that are permitted by Florida law.
