BCPS Celebrates the Ninth Annual Choose Peace Week/Stop Violence Week 2018
September 14, 2018
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) celebrates Choose Peace/Stop Violence Week, September 17 – 21, 2018. This year’s theme, “The Right to Peace - Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” aims to spread messages of peace, create environments that are free from bullying and violence, and promote tolerance and positive change. The District is proud to partner with the United Way of Broward County, Children’s Services Council of Broward County and Starbucks Corporation.
As part of Choose Peace Week/Stop Violence Week, District schools get a chance to win a Peace Pole, which serves as a visual reminder of the importance of peace within a community. The pole also reminds students to speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony throughout the school year.
Following are a few of the many activities taking place across the District:
• Starbucks Coffee Cup Peace Sleeves
A project in collaboration with Starbucks Corporation, BCPS students decorated thousands of coffee cup sleeves with peace symbols, slogans and messages as part of the “Community Kindness Challenge.” Starbucks will hand out the sleeves to customers during Peace Week (pictured right)
• Chalk4Peace
Allows students to express messages of inspiration and visions for peace using sidewalk chalk art (approximately 110 BCPS schools participating)
• Imagine Peace Wish Tree
Displays decorated trees with messages of peace from students and school staff members (approximately 84 BCPS schools participating)
• “Choose Peace Poster Contest”
Annual contest allowing young illustrators and graphic designers to express their visions of peace.
• International Peace Day and Choose Peace Across Broward Day
Students and staff are encouraged to wear white on Friday, September 21, to promote a safe, peaceful and non-violent community
• A Minute of Silence for a Moment of Peace
At noon on Friday, September 21, students and staff will join participants across the world to pray for, meditate on and to envision peace. The goal is to create a “peace wave” as a shared act of peace building
• Peace Pole Ceremony at Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K–8
Students will plant a Peace Pole on Friday, September 21, at Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K–8, which is located at 1000 SW 3rd Street, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009
In addition, two BCPS students are being honored for their winning “Choose Peace/Stop Violence” poster contest. Congratulations to the following students: Navya Pant, 7th grade, Walter C. Young Middle School and Justine Therrien, 11th grade, Coral Springs High School. The posters (pictured above), along with activities, will be used in schools all year to focus attention on promoting kindness.
