Taste Test: BCPS Students Select New Menu Items for the 2019/20 School Year at the Annual Student Food Show

WHEN: Friday, January 18, 2019, 9:45 a.m. – 2 p.m.
WHERE: Pompano Beach High School, 600 NE 13th Avenue, Pompano Beach, FL 33060
WHY: Approximately 200 students from Watkins Elementary School and Nova Middle School will taste potential menu items and instantly rate them on iPads at food stations. The fan-favorite menu items will then be introduced to next school year’s cafeteria menu across the District.
Students will sample a variety of items, including egg and cheese rolled tacos, gluten-free chicken tamales, lemongrass chicken, macaroni and cheese, maple chip mini waffles, meatloaf, oven roasted chicken wings, pineapple empanadas, potato and cheese pierogis, roasted garbanzo beans, soft filled Cocoa Puffs™ bars, vanilla strawberry bites, vegan chik’n nuggets and more.
During the annual Student Food Show, a chef from Wellness in the Schools (WITS) will also be onsite providing a food demonstration, and emphasizing the importance of including healthy and fun recipes into student meal planning. WITS is a national non-profit organization that teaches students healthy habits to learn and live better.
The United States Department of Agriculture regulates food items served in schools, mandating the offering of appropriate servings of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and high-quality proteins. Vendors provide the latest new products and BCPS registered dietitians review the nutritional stats for the products and new recipes.
