On January 17, 2019, Broward County School Board members and Superintendent Robert W. Runcie provided a progress report on recommendations from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission Initial Report dated January 2, 2019.
The progress report outlined the District’s priorities and included the status on the District’s efforts regarding each of the Commission’s recommendations for school districts, noting that more than half the work has been completed with the remainder in progress. Some items also require additional discussion or legislative action.
Among the highlights:
Code Red
- Policy presented to the School Board
- 1,300 Code Red Drills conducted since the beginning of the school year
Hard Corners
- Field test during winter break
- Completion in all classrooms throughout the District by the end of February 2019
Single Point of Entry
- 195 schools (82 percent) are completed
- Remaining schools will be completed prior to the start of the 2019/20 school year
New safety and security office
- New Chief and 30 new positions
“We appreciate the work of the Commission and the recommendations presented in its initial report,” said Superintendent Runcie. “There is a tremendous amount of work that has taken place across the District focused on safety and security. For the 17 students and staff who died, the 17 who were injured, and the 271,000 students we educate every day, we won’t rest until we have the safest school district in the state of Florida.”
