Broward County School Board Approves Dr. Howard Hepburn as New BCPS Superintendent

A person in a suit and tieDescription automatically generatedBroward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomes Dr. Howard Hepburn as the new Superintendent of Schools. The Broward County School Board approved the appointment during the April 16, 2024, School Board meeting, following an announcement by Superintendent Dr. Peter B. Licata that he was retiring due to medical reasons. Following the School Board vote, Dr. Hepburn’s tenure as Superintendent began immediately.

Before being appointed as Superintendent, Dr. Hepburn served BCPS as the Deputy Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. With more than 20 years of experience in education, Dr. Hepburn has also served as instructional superintendent, classroom teacher, principal, assistant principal, coach and dean prior to joining BCPS.

“We offer a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Licata for his dedicated service and commitment to our students and understand the need for him to focus on his health and family at this time,” said School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff. “We are grateful to have Dr. Hepburn ready to take the helm and continue the important work of our District.”

“I thank the School Board for their trust and support as I proudly serve the District in this new capacity,” said Superintendent Dr. Hepburn, “As Superintendent, my focus remains on moving our District to an ‘A’ grade and ensuring all students receive a world-class education. We will continue to prioritize closing achievement gaps, increasing student access to accelerated courses and implementing strategies to support continuous student achievement.”

Dr. Hepburn holds a Bachelor of Science in Science Education and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Central Florida, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Florida Southern College.
