Statement from Superintendent Robert W. Runcie Regarding Governor Ron DeSantis Recommended Budget for 2020/21
November 19, 2019,
“We appreciate that Governor DeSantis is continuing the conversation about increasing teacher pay. It is the right conversation to have.
Along with the plan to raise the minimum teacher salary to $47,500, we have to keep in mind that our veteran teachers should also benefit from any salary increase. The $300 million proposed for the new teacher and principal bonus program would be better directed to salary increases, which not only provide greater financial stability for our teachers, but also count towards their retirement at the end of their career.
It was gratifying to see the proposed increases for the mental health allocation. Mental health and wellness are critical for our teachers and students. The legislature should, however, continue to increase its investment in the Safe School Allocation. The proposed increase of $1.4 million statewide is simply not enough.
Teachers deserve better. We can do better.”
