Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, To and Through Advising Challenge Grant Provides Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) with $90,000
Through a partnership with the National College Access Network, BCPS will receive $90,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of its To and Through Advising Challenge grant. BCPS is one of only 20 school districts in the nation to receive this prestigious award. The grant equips teachers to advance the postsecondary outcomes of students by improving postsecondary advising, increasing access to financial aid and using data more effectively. In addition, through the grant, school districts receive individualized coaching and access to effective models, tools and practices. For more information, contact Ralph Aiello, BCPS School Counseling and BRACE at 754-321-1675.
Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Presents More Than $64,000 to BCPS for Arts Integration
BCPS is the recipient of $64,152 from the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, a private charitable foundation dedicated to education, job training and the arts. The endowment provides support to enrich instruction through arts integration at three BCPS Turnaround Arts elementary schools – Bethune Elementary School, Lake Forest Elementary School and Walker Elementary School, and three elementary magnet schools – Colbert Elementary School, Deerfield Park Elementary School and North Andrews Gardens Elementary School.
Teachers at these schools will participate in an ongoing series of professional learning opportunities in collaboration with local teaching artists from the Broward Cultural Division, Broward Center for the Performing Arts and South Florida Symphony. Through this initiative, students will have the opportunity to express and develop their artistic talent at local and national performing arts venues, and opportunities will be provided for schools to engage their families and communities.
The Turnaround Arts Program, an initiative of the John F. Kennedy Center, is based on the premise that high-quality and integrated arts education can strengthen school reform efforts, boost academic achievement, and increase student engagement in schools. BCPS Applied Learning Department, STEM+ Computer Science (CS), Program Receives $30,045 Grant from the Dart Foundation
The BCPS STEM+CS program plans to redesign and furnish a fully-functional makerspace at Crystal Lake Middle School, thanks to a $30,045 grant from the Dart Foundation. The goal of the project is to provide BCPS students the opportunity to explore, learn and create with the latest technologies to help prepare them for the 21st century workforce, and inspire them to consider careers in STEM fields. The BrowardSTEM makerspace will engage students in hands-on learning in robotics, computer science, 3-D modeling and printing, and engineering. Additionally, students will be encouraged to develop products that serve a real-world application.
Objectives of the project also include: utilizing the makerspace classroom and an afterschool program as a model that other schools can replicate; serving as a training room for teacher professional development to increase access to high-quality STEM instruction across the District; and developing a mentorship program for high school students to earn volunteer service hours while teaching younger students in STEM.
The Dart Foundation is a private family foundation established by Dart Container Corporation founder William A. Dart and his wife Claire T. Dart. The Foundation supports projects that enhance education, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math, and those that improve the quality of life in specific communities. For more information, contact Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, Applied Learning at 754-321-2623.
