Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Tragedy Commemoration
Below is a ParentLink message from Superintendent Robert W. Runcie:
Hello, this is Broward County Public Schools Superintendent, Robert Runcie. On Thursday, February 14th, our District and the community will commemorate the lives lost and those impacted by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. This day will be committed to service and love in our schools and across the county. Many schools have partnered with organizations to host service projects throughout the school day. These projects may include some outdoor activities like planting gardens or painting murals.
All schools and District departments will observe a moment of silence at 10:17 a.m. to honor the 17 lives lost one year ago.
Following advice from national organizations and law enforcement personnel regarding the potential for increased anonymous threats and potential for people who might seek attention by attempting to harm others on that day, we will have heightened security protocols in all our schools. Activities and movements during the school day will be restricted to the internal areas of our campuses. To that end, we ask that you assist us by speaking with your children about refraining from actions that would compromise school safety, such as student walkouts – either out of class or off campus. All after school clubs, activities, academic competitions and athletic events – with the exception of FHSAA championship competitions– have been canceled for that evening. Night school and evening adult classes will occur as scheduled. If you have questions or concerns regarding specific campus operations, please contact your student’s school administration.
As we continue to recover from the tragedy, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide our students, employees, parents and community members peaceful places to learn and grow. Thank you.
