Welcome Back Walker Family!
We are all very excited to begin the new school year, and can’t wait to welcome back our students and families. As you probably have heard, we once again moved up our school grade. Over the last two years, student achievement has increased by 131% at Walker Elementary, the highest percentage of improvement in Broward County over this span of time. Even though our students have made extraordinary academic achievement gains, we are not, and will never be satisfied with being a “C” rated school, as we continue to strive toward becoming and maintaining an “A” rating.
At Walker Elementary, we take great pride in ensuring that students, staff, and guests are safe and secure on our campus at all times. Please keep in mind that there will be new safety measures that we all must comply with as part of Broward County School District policy. The majority of these safety measures have already been put in place at Walker Elementary, but it is very important that everyone is fully aware of our safety protocols. Our “Meet and Greet” will be on Tuesday, August 14, (5:30 pm for grades K-2, 6:30 pm for grades 3-5). This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, and for your child to know where their class is before the first day of school on Wednesday, August 15. We are allowing parents who wish to walk their child to class to do so on the first three days of school. Beginning on Monday, August 20, only parents who have a parent conference or other school-related business will be allowed to enter campus. We do welcome volunteers and we encourage you to be a partner in your child’s education, but for the safety and protection of staff and students, all visitors must be cleared through our security system during school hours prior to entry by using your government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, or State of Florida identification. Only one gate to our parking lot will be open during school hours, and school personnel will monitor this gate during these times. If this gate cannot be monitored due to lightning or other unsafe conditions, then the gate will be locked. If you have an emergency and need to pick up your child while the gate is locked, we ask that you call our office at 754-322-8800 and will unlock the gate for you. We know that these safety measures can cause an inconvenience and are time consuming, but we must never allow that to compromise the safety of our students, staff, or guests.
Our breakfast program begins at 7:20 am. Students may only come on campus at from 6:30 am until 7:20 am who are enrolled in our ASP Before Care Program. Students will eat breakfast as part of the Before Care Program. When dropping off students, we ask that you pull up as far as you can and then come to a complete stop when dropping off your child or children. Please do not leave your vehicle while in the car loop. If you need to assist your child please pull into a vacant parking spot or somewhere where it doesn't block the pathway of others. A special thank you to our parents and guests who do not blast their radios or speed through our car loop, and who are always courteous and respectful to others,....you are appreciated! During dismissal, we are asking that all car riders please place the card that was given to you by your teacher on the dashboard of each vehicle used for pick up every day. This will help expedite the dismissal process. As with arrival, please do not leave your vehicle unattended in the car loop. Our school dismisses at 3:00 PM. All students who are not picked up by 3:15 PM will be considered late dismissal and will need to be signed out in the office. We respectfully ask that if you need to pick up your child or children later than 3:15 PM, that you enroll them in either our ASP afterschool program or 21st Century Academic Program. These two programs serve our families when school is in session, as well as on many no school days and Holidays. For further information please contact our front office at 754-322-8800.
I want to wish each and every member of our Walker Family a successful school year and to thank you for entrusting your children to us during the school day. I pledge to all that we will do everything in our power, and explore all resources at our disposal to ensure that each and every one of your child’s needs are met. If you would like to meet with me in person about anything, or if we can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to contact our assistant principal, Mr. Eligon or me. We have a true open door policy and welcome the opinions and ideas of others. All that I ask is that if you have a specific concern about something that happened in your child’s classroom, that you give the respect and courtesy to your child’s teacher and discuss the issue with them first. Working hand in hand together, I am confident that all issues and concerns can be rectified with positive results. I am looking forward to a fantastic year!
