Meet our Counselor

  • School counselors promote and enhance achievement with an annual comprehensive school counseling plan that ensures that every student receives school counseling services. Credentialed school counselors provide comprehensive counseling programs that incorporate prevention and intervention with continuous academic, career, and personal/development activities that will prepare them for meaningful participation in a diverse, changing world. These activities include classroom guidance, small groups for skill mastery, individual counseling for students with specific needs, and a variety of other proactive and innovative ways to support student performance.

School counselors implement a program based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. They also provide resources to staff, students, families, and others to ensure that a family-friendly environment is established and ensure that students have access to a safe school climate necessary for academic and social/emotional growth.

Parents are always welcome to come in or call 754-322-7059 for assistance or advice.

    School Counselor CourtneyHi there!
I am Cortney Valme, McNab's School Counselor. I am SO thrilled to be here for my fifth year and I'm very much looking forward to another excellent school year with our students. A little bit about me - I am a Florida native and a product of the Broward County Public Schools system. I live nearby with my husband, two young children, and three cats. Some of my favorite things include Disney movies, reading, singing, dancing, and all things silly (especially when it comes to my kiddos).
I've always known that I wanted to work with children in some capacity, but not necessarily as a teacher. As a School Counselor, I have the unique opportunity to implement social-emotional learning school-wide, while also providing more targeted solution-focused counseling to students in small groups and individually, as needed. It is important to note that time is limited during the school day, so the counseling I provide is intended to be brief, but is nonetheless valuable to our students' wellbeing. I believe that in order to reach a child's mind, we must first reach their heart. I meet with students based on teacher, staff, or administrative referrals, parent requests, or student self-referral. Should a situation warrant more in-depth and regular counseling, which is beyond my scope of practice, I will refer you to an outside counseling resource.
When I meet with students, I always remind them that I am ethically bound by confidentiality, which means I do not share details about our counseling sessions with others unless they tell me they are hurting themselves, hurting someone else, someone else is hurting them, or they give me explicit permission to share. That being said, I believe in keeping open lines of communication with parents. I am happy to speak with you about your student but will maintain that confidentiality whenever possible to protect that counseling relationship.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. I can be reached via email or by phone at 754-322-7050.
    Here's to a successful 2021-2022 school year! 🙂
