Dear Plantation Middle School Parents and Community,
As Head of School of Plantation Middle School, it has been my privilege to serve you for the last 4 years and to celebrate the achievements of our students, staff, and school with the expansion of our International Baccalaureate program to include ALL students. I am very proud to share that Plantation Middle School is a Nationally Recognized Magnet School of Distinction from Magnet Schools of America for the third consecutive year in a row! I am also proud to share with you that I was selected as a presenter at the Magnet Schools of America conference in Baltimore 2019 on equity and access to all students. I am excited as we embark on a new year of growth for our students and our school. We continue to expand and broaden our academic offerings, social and emotional learning supports, and infusion of technology in our classrooms. This year we have changed from a 6 period day to a Block Schedule – “Red” (Odd – 1, 3, 5, 7) and “Blue” (Even 2, 4, 6, 8). Students have 4 classes a day for 88 minutes long, giving students and teachers time to delve more deeply into the curriculum of 4 classes, instead of 6. The teachers and staff are elated to begin the new school year with this new schedule and eagerly await the first day of school and the arrival of our students.
I am also excited to share with you that Plantation Middle, for the second consecutive year, has been selected to receive a grant on behalf of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the United States Department of State to host a Fully Funded teacher of Mandarin Chinese as part of the 2019-2020 Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP). In 2018-2019, we were the very first school in all of BCPS to ever receive such a distinguished grant! Last year we welcomed Ms. Zhao Xin from China, who began our Mandarin Chinese program. This year, Ms. Huang Can from China will be expanding our Chinese program with Chinese 1 and Chinese 2, giving our students an opportunity to compete in a globally competitive market!
At Plantation Middle School, we believe that all students should be promoted from middle school into the high school experience of their choice well prepared to navigate the depth and rigor of high school, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced Placement coursework. It is our mission to develop and embrace all students, teachers, and parents into a community that embodies the spirit of multiculturalism and academic excellence. We aim to equip our students to be global competitors on the International stage.
This year we are further expanding the horizons of our International Baccalaureate program as Magic Leap is building a Maker Space in our school. Magic Leap is a cutting edge artificial Intelligence, Technology Company that understands the value of mentoring students who are becoming 21 Century competitor’s in a global market place.
In order to maintain and surpass artificial intelligence in the realm of technology, one must be immersed in the industry at an early age. The iBELLA program (International Business Entrepreneurial Language Leadership Academy) is our first Innovative Program at PLMS. Keeping in alignment with iBELLA, a partnership with Magic Leap seemed a perfect fit as International Business is an aspect of their company embedded in STEM and STEAM creating a pathway to work with professionals in the new Maker Space where the students will have stations where they can learn Engineering, Technology, Graphics, and Art Design.
Parents act as a compass for their students, guiding them on the path to success. We embrace parent involvement and seek to optimize communication with parents as we work together for the success of each child. Please make sure to keep the school updated with your current contact information when you complete the enclosed first day packet of documents so we may keep you updated on the exciting developments and events offered at Plantation Middle School this school year. We need your participation in our School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings, School Advisory Form (SAF) meetings, and to join PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) so you can help make our school greater!
On behalf of the staff at Plantation Middle School, I welcome you and we look forward to working with you as partners in your child’s educational journey.
