Pre-Law & Public Affairs

  • The Pre-Law and Public Affairs magnet program at Fort Lauderdale High School provides a well-rounded, college-preparatory curriculum designed for students who are interested in exploring various careers in legal studies, criminal justice, and public service.  Our goal is to graduate students who have gained real-world experience and insight into their future careers; have developed the foundations needed to inspire, realize, and pursue law and public affairs related passions; and have already made significant connections with community members in law, government, or public service.

Program Offers

  • The Pre-Law & Public Affairs program offers a variety of courses in the following tracks: Law, Government & Politics, Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement, Public Service (Military, Firefighting, EMT), and Social Work.

Academic Requirements

  • Students from throughout Broward County who meet the requirements may apply to the Cambridge AICE Magnet Program at Fort Lauderdale High School.

Students applying to the magnet program must have a 2.5 GPA or higher and a Level 3 or higher (i.e. passing) on their Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) for Reading and Math or a math End-of-Course Examination (EOC).

Transportation for Magnet Students

  • Fort Lauderdale High School is an all-county magnet school which means transportation is provided for ALL out of boundary magnet students living more than two miles from our school.

  • Can magnet students earn a Cambridge AICE Diploma and take Pre-Law Courses?

Yes. While students can only be registered to one magnet program, all courses are available to academically qualified students at FLHS.

  • How will my student’s classes be scheduled for next year?

All magnet students are scheduled in accordance with their 8th grade test scores and GPA. Most magnet students (both Pre-Law and Cambridge) will be enrolled in 3 AICE courses (English, Social Science, and Science), the next math course in their progression, and 3 elective courses. Pre-Law students are required to select at least 1 elective course each year.

  • What is the difference between Advanced Placement (AP) and AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education)?

The content area is similar in both AP and AICE because they are designed to be accelerated academic courses which allow students to earn college credit.  AP examinations are a combination of multiple choice and essay questions and are administered by the College Board.  AICE exams are governed by the University of Cambridge and are formatted to demonstrate critical thinking and analytical writing through essay responses.

  • How many AP/AICE courses can magnet students take?

As many as they can handle academically.

  • If I don’t get the AICE Diploma, can I still get a Bright Futures Scholarship?

Yes.  Students can earn Bright Futures Scholarships in several ways. Please visit the Florida Bright Futures website at http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf/bfmain.htm.
