Principal's Message

  • A radical shift is about to begin; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy will earn its first letter grade of a “B” in the history of school assessments.”---Mitshuca B. Moreau

“Celebrate what you’ve accomplished, but raise the bar a little higher each time you succeed.”

Principal Moreau It is an honor to continue to serve as your principal at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Montessori Academy! We all worked diligently to obtain our letter grade of a “C”. It is a proud moment for the staff, the community, the students and all stakeholders for our wonderful school to be out of the state Differentiated Accountability Model.

Thank you to all who were involved and supported MLK during a very tough school year where all cards were on the table for a “make it or break it year”. We believed, we motivated and engaged our community and we achieved a double letter grade increase with some amazing data!

We continue to improve third grade literacy rates from year to year. As I have often stated, when students are reading on grade level and beyond, there is no limit to their success in future years in school. Overall ELA proficiency went up by 5%. Third grade FSA ELA went from 29% in 2017 to 38% in 2018. Third grade FSA Math also went from 24% in 2017 to 48% in 2018. Here are some highlights from our math data for 2018:

MLK's performance as measured by the 2018 FSA Math was phenomenal! MLK is in the Top 1% (#2 out of 1,635 traditional Elementary schools) in the State for its Percentage Point Change (FSA Math Components Percent) from 2017 to 2018. In 2017, the FSA Math Components Percent (Average of Math Achievement, Math Learning Gains and Math Lowest 25% Learning Gains) was 27%. By 2018, MLK's FSA Math Components Percent was 69%.  This represents a phenomenal Percentage Point Change of +42, placing MLK in the Top 1% in the state among traditional Elementary schools

While I continue to ensure that student achievement is top priority, it is not at the expense of our students’ Social Emotional Learning and growth. Please know that the staff embraces the core principles of the Montessori Philosophy and help students build relationships, learn life skills and teamwork in a safe, peaceful environment.

I would like to invite all of you to become active participants in your child's education by joining our School Advisory Council (SAC), PTA, or volunteering your time at one of our many events; when you are involved with your child's school, they understand the importance you place on their education.

Let’s have another great school year!!
