Welcome back to another awesome year of education and literacy. My name is Nadine Smith and I am your McArthur High School 2021-2022 Literacy Coach. I look forward to a new year of supporting students, teachers and parents through literacy. My educational journey began in Brooklyn New York. My parents later migrated to South Florida, where I attended South Broward High School. Following that, I received a bachelor’s degree in History from the beautiful Bethune-Cookman College. Additionally, I have also earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University.  Having been in education for 19 years, I have served in the capacity of classroom teacher, athletic coach, behavior specialist and in my current role as literacy coach and received the honor of being named Broward County’s 2019-2020 Literacy Coach of the year.  My vision involves bridging the gap in education by reinforcing foundational skills as well as increasing rigor and enrichment for college and career readiness. Please follow our MCA Literacy Twitter page at @at_mca for all things literacy.

  • Paula Coffman

As I begin my 49th year in the education, I still get excited about beginning the new school year. Being a "Seasoned/Veteran" teacher, I understand that this year will be another challenging one. I have been married for 48 years to a wonderful man, we have three children and three grandchildren. I have taught many levels of English, Reading, Mass Media, Speech Education and was a Literacy Coach, an Academic Advisor, Teacher of the Year, and a Principal.

All of us - parents, scholars, teachers, and administrators have an enormous responsibility to adjust and feel comfortable in the learning process. It will take all of us time to adjust. I have no doubt that we will by taking it slow and understanding that each positive step taken is a step towards success.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, with a double major in Interdisciplinary Studies from Florida International University. I strongly believe that a well-rounded education in both STEM, and liberal arts is the best way for students to excel in their academic career. I encourage all my students to think broadly about their academic goals and truly motivate them to blend their own experiences, with what they are learning inside the classroom.
