Stirling Elementary is a PROUD Special Olympics School.

Our students have the opportunity to participate in several Special Olympics events throughout the school year, including traditional games (ages 8+), Young Athletes Program (YAP, ages 2-7), Club Unify, Spread the Word campaign, and many more!

  • Special Olympics Traditional Teams

Participation on our Special Olympics competitive teams is FREE for our students with Intellectual Disability and Autism, ages 8+.

There are 4 forms that must be completed in order for your child to compete. The bottom portion of the Medical Release (first paper) MUST be completed and signed by your child's physician. A parent/guardian must complete and sign the other 3 pages. Once all of the forms are completed, please return them to your child's teacher.

  • Basketball

Our athletes have two opportunities to compete in basketball:

    • Individual Skills competition - Each athlete competes individually and earns a score based on 3 events - Spot Shot (shooting baskets), 10M dribble (timed dribble down a lane), and Target Pass (passing the ball to a specific target on the wall).
    • Team Skills competition - Team of 5 athletes. Team members stand in specific locations around the basket, taking turns passing the ball to one another, and shooting.
    • Participation in these events depends upon the number of athletes that register to participate. We can only participate in Team Skills if we have at least 5 athletes.
    • Practices are held during school hours and will begin in late September.
    • If needed, transportation to the competitions is available for athletes. This must be pre-arranged.

  • Young Athletes Program

Students in our InD special program classes under the age of 8 have the opportunity to participate in the Young Athletes Program (YAP).

YAP is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities and their peers, designed to introduce them into the world of sports. These activities help children improve physically, cognitively, and socially, while raising awareness of the Special Olympics program and serves as an introduction to the resources and support available within Special Olympics Florida to families, agencies, and schools.

A YAP culminating event will take place at Stirling Elementary School in Spring 2020 for all participants and their parents to attend.
