We hope you enjoyed the summer break and are now ready to begin another productive school year. As we prepare to welcome students back to class on August 15, 2018, as a reminder, please note that our school hours for the 2018/2019 school year are as follows: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Breakfast is served from 7:15 - 7:50am. Classes start promptly at 8:00am and end at 3:00pm for grades K-5. Pre-K ESE students are still released at 2:00pm.
This schedule continues to extend the regular school day by one hour, a change that was first implemented at Charles R. Drew Elementary Magnet School in the 2014/2015 school year. The extended learning time will be devoted to providing an extra hour of intensive reading instruction and enrichment for our students.
The extension of instructional time beyond the normal school day is required by Florida law for students who attend the 300 lowest performing elementary schools (in the state) based on the results of the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) for English Language Arts.
Please note, students who will enter grades four or five for the 2018/19 school year and who scored a Level 5 on the English Language Arts assessment may “opt out” of the extended instructional learning time. Parents can contact Ms. Angeline H. Flowers, Principal regarding this option.
We know that you may have questions about the extended instructional time and new school hours. Therefore, we have attached to this letter a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and answers.
If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to call our main office at 754-322-6250 or contact the District’s Office of Service Quality at 754-321- 3636.
