Mr. Tommy Dong (Coach Dong)
Coach Tommy Dong is a dedicated and enthusiastic educator with over 26 years of experience in teaching and coaching. His teaching philosophy emphasizes rigor while accommodating all skill and ability levels, ensuring each student receives the support and encouragement needed to succeed.
Coach Dong holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University and an Associate of Arts from Broward Community College. He is certified in both Elementary Education (Grades 1-6) and Physical Education (Grades K-12) by the state of Florida.
Throughout his career, Coach Dong has specialized in Physical Education, teaching students of all ages and coaching both boys and girls in various sports, including baseball, softball, and football. His commitment to fostering positive relationships extends beyond the classroom, as he maintains open and healthy communication with parents to keep them informed and involved in their children's education.
Before his current role, Coach Dong taught Physical Education at New River Middle School, Ramblewood Middle School, and served as an Internal Suspension Teacher at Miramar High School and the Alternative to External Program in Miramar, Florida. He began his teaching career as a General Education Teacher at Bethune Elementary School in Hollywood, Florida, where he taught in a self-contained classroom and designed innovative curricula to enhance student learning.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Coach Dong has an extensive coaching background. He has served as the head coach for boys and girls' football at New River Middle School and boys and girls' track at Ramblewood Middle School. His coaching experience also includes roles as an assistant baseball and softball coach at Broward Community College, as well as assistant baseball coach positions at Northeast High School, Piper High School, and Miami Jackson Senior High School.
Coach Dong's dedication to sports and physical education is further highlighted by his impressive list of athletic achievements. He played professional baseball for the Duluth Dukes in the Independent Baseball Northern League and was recognized as the MVP for Nova Southeastern University's baseball team. He also earned All-Conference first team honors in baseball at Broward Community College and participated in the Big League World Series.
Coach Dong's commitment to education, his interdisciplinary approach to teaching, and his ability to engage students across different learning modalities make him a valuable asset to any educational institution. His passion for fostering a positive and productive learning environment ensures that his students not only learn the rules and strategies of various sports but also develop essential life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-confidence. This is his first year joining us at Sheridan Technical High School, and he looks forward to an adventurous year ahead!
Coach Dong is married and has two daughters. He enjoys playing golf, working out, playing with his cats, and spending time with his family. He also loves to watch his favorite teams play!
