There are many avenues to promote substance abuse prevention with students. Below you will find a number of curriculums that focus on that, as well as ones that promote social and emotional learning (SEL), an effective strategy towards insuring lifelong wellness. Above the Influence (ATI) Grades 1-12 Everyone’s life has pressure, some of it good, some of it bad. ATI helps students stand up to negative pressures or influences such as drugs and alcohol, bullying, discrimination, and destructive behavior or attitudes. Use the ATI Toolkit's lessons as a stand-alone, or in preparation for the annual ATI March. |

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Grades K-12 ADL's anti-bias education helps to create and sustain an inclusive and violence-free school. ADL has lessons on videos on numerous violence prevention, diversity, and health and wellness related topics. |

Catch My Breath Curriculum Grades 6-12 A best-practices youth E-cigarette and JUUL prevention program developed to provide up-to-date information to teachers, parents, and health professionals to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about the use of E-cigarettes, including JUUL devices. It uses a peer-led teaching approach and meets National and State Health Education Standards. View the Flyer to register. |

Character Education Grades K-12 Each Monthly Character Education Newsletter and Family Newsletter contains lessons, videos, and activities on BCPS's 8 character traits. These traits promote positive behavior and create a safer and more respectful learning environment for our students. |

Child Safety Matters, Monique Burr Foundation Grades K-8 The program is provided at no cost to FL public school teachers, view this flyer to learn more. Lessons educate and empower students with information and strategies to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all types of child abuse, digital abuse, and other dangers. |

Common Sense Education, Digital Citizenship Curriculum Grades K-12 Online curriculum made up of 65 grade-differentiated lesson plans. The Scope & Sequence consists of 3 units for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8, and 4 units for grades 9-12. Each unit has 5 lessons, family activities, and professional development resources. Topics include cyberbullying, privacy, safety, and more. |

EVERFI Grades K-12 The digital education platform has free lessons, videos, surveys, assessments, and interactive exercises that teach financial capability, character, substance abuse prevention, STEM, health and wellness, social-emotional learning, relationship skills, cultural & civic literacy, and career preparedness. Examples of substance abuse prevention related lessons include Alcohol Edu for High School and Prescription Drug Safety (both for grades 9-12). |

“The Facts. Your Future.” Campaign Grades K-12 The ‘School Assemblies Toolkit’ contains materials such as fact sheets, conversation maps, and a school assembly template to guide schools in hosting their own events. Schools are encouraged to partner with community entities to host dynamic, multimedia assemblies that will share real life scenarios and science-based facts about substance abuse. |

FL DOE Comprehensive Health Education Mandates Grades K-12 The State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.094121, F.A.C., requires a minimum of five hours of instruction related to mental and emotional health education to every student in grades K-12 annually. The content areas to be taught are mental and emotional health, substance use and abuse prevention, internet safety and/or human trafficking, and character education. |

Keepin’ It Real Grades 6-12 This culturally grounded research-based drug prevention curriculum has been proven effective for reducing drug use and establishing anti-drug attitudes and beliefs. The program teaches kids HOW to say “no” to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs without losing friendships. |

Kindness in the Classroom, Random Acts of Kindness Grades K-12 Offers free lesson plans, kindness projects, and kindness club ideas. The curriculum features developmentally appropriate, standards-aligned lessons teaching important social and emotional (SEL) skills. |

Media Smarts, Canada’s Center for Digital and Media Literacy Grades K-12, Parents Provides games, guides, lesson plans, tip sheets, and workshops on the topics of alcohol marketing, body image, online safety, cyberbullying, digital citizenship, diversity and minorities, gender representation, human rights, media literacy, sexting, tobacco marketing, violence and much more. |

Natural High Grades 6-12 Free DVD series and curriculum for students focusing on drug use prevention with personal testimonies shared by drug free celebrities, athletes, and roles models. Videos show young people living fun, exciting and successful lives without drugs and alcohol by embracing their natural highs. Available in our department's SharePoint or via website. |

NIDA for Teens, Facts on Drugs Grades 6-12 Use NIDA curricula and activities to help educate students about the effects of drugs on their bodies, brains, and behavior. The free age-appropriate lessons promote an understanding of drug abuse and addiction and a curiosity about neuroscience. Check out their Drug Facts Challenge!, a Jeopardy-style game based on scientific findings about the brain and addiction, marijuana, prescription drugs, tobacco/nicotine/E-Cigs, and inhalants. |

Planting Seeds of Prevention Curriculum Book Grades K-12 The Planting Seeds of Prevention’ Curriculum Book contains multiple lessons on the 6 strands of prevention for both primary and secondary grades. |

Project Alert Grades 7-8 A substance abuse prevention program proven to reduce the experimental and continued use of drugs. Through comprehensive lessons, students are motivated against drug use, it cultivates new non-use attitudes and beliefs, and equips teens with the skills and strategies they’ll use to resist drugs. It includes online training, web-based and downloadable lesson plans, a teen leader program, videos and posters. |

Project Brain Grades 6-12 A Social Norms campaign facilitated in numerous BCPS empowering youth to prevent or reduce alcohol consumption. Through the use of the research based Social Norms approach, a change in perception towards alcohol is created, resulting in a change in behavior. |

Reality Avenue, Reality Avenue, Addiction: How REAL is it?
Grades 6-12
The shows and lessons educate and empower students to improve their health and wellness. The two show formats available are 1) 12, 30 minute shows on topics such as Body Image, Addiction, Internet, Teen Stress, Self Injury, Diversity, Self Esteem, Depression/Anger, Bullying, Divorce, Character, and Relationships as well as 2) 8, 10-15 minute shows on the District’s character traits. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Grades K-12 SEL enables students and adults to recognize and manage emotions, solve problems effectively and establish positive relationships with others. SEL provides direct instruction in skills that enable students to succeed in school and life by being responsible citizens and decision makers. It supports school cultures and climates to allow students to practice life skills throughout their school experience. |
