School Climate & Discipline (SC&D) Department’s goal is to lead the change for all BCPS students in achieving lifelong academic, behavioral, social and emotional success. This goal is achieved by providing essential services, supports and resources to all BCPS. Resources are grouped into the 6 strands of prevention and intervention: diversity, health and wellness, instructional strategies, substance abuse prevention, violence prevention, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)/academic and behavioral supports.
Why Climate & Discipline?
We all, students and staff, deserve school environments that are safe, supportive, and conducive to teaching and learning. But how can we create this? Through the use of continuous improvement to deliberately assess and improve each school’s climate and discipline. Climate and discipline are not interchangeable, but are interwoven and interactive.
In positive school climates, students feel safe to learn. Staff pay close attention to the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all students. Schools set and enforce behavioral expectations through effective, consistent, equitable, and graduated discipline. This ensures all students learn the skills they need to succeed both academically and later in life. Click here to learn more about the connection between school climate and discipline.
