    Rethink Your School Choices

BCPS provides families with a variety of school choice options and encourages parents/guardians to explore all that BCPS has to offer.

  • How do I apply?

The next opportunity to apply is August 13, 2018.

If you are interested in an innovative program or magnet program at your child’s assigned school, you do not need to submit a School Choice Phase II application.  Instead, contact the school for information on how to participate.

If you are interested in a program not available at your assigned school or if you would like your child to attend a school other than your assigned school, you may submit up to two applications for your child - a magnet program application and a reassignment application*.  Applications will be processed and granted based on the remaining available seats from School Choice Phase I (December 1, 2017 – February 7, 2018).

This year, Phase II is divided into multiple application periods, to provide families with quicker notifications regarding the status of their child’s application.

*If you are interested in an Innovative Program not at your assigned school, you may apply for entry to that school through a School Choice reassignment application.

Families who applied during School Choice Phase I do not need to submit an application during School Choice Phase II, unless a magnet program or reassignment school change is desired.
Waitpool applicants will be notified by August 28, 2018, if their child is awarded a seat. Applicants in a wait pool are not guaranteed a seat.

Visit Broward Schools School Choice Timelines for a schedule of application submission and notification dates.

Please note:  Nova schools do not accept applications during the School Choice Phase II application window.

Reassignments allow attendance to a school that is not your assigned school.

Innovative Programs offer courses of study centered on specific themes.
If you are interested in an innovative program at your assigned school, a School Choice application is not necessary.  Please contact your assigned school for information on how to participate.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs prepare high school students for post-secondary enrollment and apprenticeships.
If you are interested in a CTE program at your assigned high school, a School Choice application is not necessary.  Please contact your assigned high school for information on how to participate.

Collegiate Academies offer high school students the opportunity to earn their high school diploma and their Associates in Arts degree.

  • What is the status of my School Choice application?

Parents and guardians who submitted an application during either School Choice Phase I or Phase II for a magnet program, Nova school (School Choice Phase I only) and/or school reassignment will be notified on scheduled selection dates, regarding the status of each application.  Notifications will be emailed, updated on the Check Your Status webpage.

All awarded seats must be claimed by the date indicated on the award notification.

  • I am new to Broward County Public Schools, can I still apply for School Choice?

Welcome to Broward County!  School-aged children living within Broward County are assigned to a school based on their primary residential address and grade level. This is the child's assigned school.  Please contact the assigned school to register each child.  To find your child’s assigned school, please visit the School Locator

We understand families want to have options for their child's education, which may include a choice other than their assigned school.

Parents and guardians may submit an application for magnet programs and school reassignments.

To submit an application, you will need your child’s BCPS student identification number.  If your child is not a current BCPS student or you reside outside of Broward County, visit any BCPS school to request a student identification number.

For questions regarding school assignment, please contact the Demographics & Student Assignments Department at 754-321-2480 or schoolchoice@browardschools.com.

  • I submitted an application before the deadline. Can I still send in supporting documents?

Please submit your required documents to the Demographics & Student Assignments Department.  Supporting documents received after the application deadline will be considered late.

  • What if I missed the deadline, but still want to take advantage of School Choice?

The next opportunity to apply for School Choice for the 2018/19 school year begins on July 1, 2018.  At which time, parents and guardians may submit an application for remaining available seats for magnet programs or school reassignments.  The application window for Nova schools closed on February 7, 2018 (School Choice Phase I application deadline).

Applicants who applied during the initial School Choice application window do not need to apply during the next application window unless a magnet program or reassignment school change is desired.

  • My child is in the waitpool for a seat. What does this mean?

When there are more students than available seats at a school, a computerized random selection is used to select students.  Students who are not selected for a seat are placed into a waitpool.

If new seats become available at a school, additional computerized random selections from the waitpool will be made until August 28, 2018.  There is no waitlist.  To learn when the next selections will be made, please visit School Choice Timelines.
