Elements of Mathematics Foundations (EMF)

  • Elements of Mathematics: Foundations (EMF) is an online curriculum in modern mathematics created by the Institute for Mathematics & Computer Science (IMACS) specifically for mathematically talented students.

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has an exciting Mathematics program offered to exceptional students in grades 6-8. For the 2024-2025 School Year, BCPS will open the EMF program to any interested 5th grader who is enrolled in a Brock-and-mortar, non-charter BCPS public school.

EMF is only suitable for a specific subset of students who must:

    • Have high verbal and analytical abilities,
    • Have strong intuitive mathematical abilities,
    • Have solid executive functioning skills,
    • Be independent,
    • Be self-motivated, and
    • Be willing to spend considerable time and energy persevering through challenging problems.

There are many mathematically gifted students who would enjoy learning the subject matter covered in the EMF program. However, many of them would need the presence of a talented teacher to help them master the material. EMF is not for these students. The EMF content is 100% digital.

To be accepted into the program in the fall of sixth grade, your child must complete the first two EMF courses, Operational Systems, and The Integers, with an EMF Course Grade of at least 90%, and the third EMF Course, Sets Subsets and Set Operations with an EMF Course Grade of at least 85%. The deadline to complete the coursework is July 26, 2024. Coursework will take approximately 15-30 hours per module. In addition to keeping your child's brain sharp over the summer, this experience will help you and your child decide if the program is a good fit. Success in EMF requires a high level of intellectual maturity and requires that students quickly learn to assume responsibility for their own mathematics education, so please think very carefully about whether to enroll your child.

Qualifying BCPS students may take EMF as their full-time math curriculum while in middle school. Successful EMF 8th-graders earn high school credits in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Precalculus, are well prepared for AP™ Calculus in 9th grade and qualify for dual-enrollment mathematics classes with the University of Florida.

The EMF Program is rigorous, but it should also be an exciting and enriching experience for children.
