Music and Performing Arts
The Department of Applied Learning believes the arts positively impact local communities and are critical to a complete education. Supporting young people in creative learning and artistic endeavors ensures they will be more engaged and enriched in all aspects of their lives. The presence of the arts and artists in society is a vital component of a functioning democracy.
Within our schools, music education provides the tools needed so that students can not only master the art of music making, they can also become creators of feelings and emotions. Mastering the art of music making also benefits physical and cognitive development. Dexterity and coordination are necessary skills developed to perform on a musical instrument, and the act of learning and reading music develops the same skills needed to learn a foreign language and to comprehend high order academic subjects.
Theatre is the only art form with the potential to combine all the performing arts: music, dance, and drama. Our pre-professional theatre curriculum includes acting, directing, arts administration, technical theatre, and principles of design. Theatrical makeup, costume, lighting, and scenic design all combine script analysis, technical skills, and visual arts techniques to make theatre an all-encompassing curricular experience. Broward County Public Schools is committed to providing world-class theatre education to all students and strives to ensure access to the opportunities and cultural resources necessary for cultivating skilled creators, communicators, and collaborators through the arts.
With the goal of launching them into the 21st century, the SMART Bond elevated our Music & Performing Arts programs to new heights by purchasing new musical instruments across the district in addition funding state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment to ensure our schools are home to the most competitive music and theatre programs in the state.
All County Music Concerts
A series of 4 concerts, each featuring a different music component (Concert Band, Chorus, Orchestra & Jazz Band). Each All County event allows the best students from each school (elementary, Middle and High School) the opportunity to learn from a Guest Clinician, meet other students across Broward County and bring their musical experience back to the music classroom. The All County Music events are held in conjunction with Superintendent’s AP Studio Art Exhibition.
Music Performance Assessments
Music Performance Assessments allow for the student, teacher and music program to be assessed on the Music Standards developed by the State of Florida using a rubric system that shows growth in Performance Fundamentals, Technical Accuracy & Musical Effect. The assessments are done by solos, small ensembles & whole group ensembles.
International Thespian Society
The International Thespian Society is an honor society for theatre arts students. The state of Florida is home to the largest State Thespian Festival in the world, featuring workshops and special opportunities to attendees. Thespian troupes at our schools attend District and State Competitions at both the junior and high school levels to showcase Acting, Technical Theatre, and Theatrical Design talents in Individual Events as well as in One Act Plays and Full-length Main Stage productions.
