Hurricane Dorian Relief and Recovery Efforts
A Heartfelt Thank You from Broward County Public Schools
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) thanks our partners, students, employees and residents for their generosity and support in providing relief efforts to people in the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. The Category-5 hurricane devastated the island nation in September 2019 and recovery efforts will continue for the foreseeable future.
Days after the storm, BCPS, along with its partners, The Broward Education Foundation, United Way of Broward County and BrightStar Credit Union, joined together to collect funds and much-needed supplies for Bahamians affected by the natural disaster. The BCPS community contributed nearly $10,000 to the relief effort and delivered multiple pallets of supplies to the Bahamas.
BCPS also partnered with Broward County Government to collect school supplies for displaced students including everything from pencils and notebooks to binders and calculators. These items were distributed to families at the BCPS Welcome Center, where we helped hundreds of students enroll at District schools, provided supplies and offered access to a variety of health services. The Welcome Center is located at the Lauderdale Manors Early Learning & Family Resource Center, at 1400 NW 14th Court in Fort Lauderdale.
We thank our partners and the Broward County community for the outpouring of love and support, and for providing hope to our neighbors in the Bahamas.
Broward County Public Schools Welcome Center
As part of its ongoing recovery and relief efforts to support residents displaced by Hurricane Dorian, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has opened a Welcome Center to help students and families arriving from the Bahamas. The BCPS Welcome Center is located in the Lauderdale Manors Early Learning & Family Resource Center, at 1400 NW 14th Court in Fort Lauderdale.
The Welcome Center provides families with support for student registration into District schools, and once registered, connects families to school social workers, who provide school supplies, uniforms and clothes, food, and information on local resources. In addition, the Welcome Center offers access to a variety of health services, in partnership with the Florida Department of Health in Broward.
