Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement program created by the College Board allows students to complete college-level course work while in high school. Upon successful completion of course work and corresponding exam, students can earn three to six college credits for each Advanced Placement course. Credit for Advanced Placement courses varies based on exam scores as well as college and university requirements.

AP Scholar Awards

AP Scholar
Students must earn a score of 3 or higher on at least three AP Exams.
AP Scholar with Honor
Students must have an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams, and earn a 3 or higher on four or more exams.
AP Scholar with Distinction
Students must have an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams, and earn a 3 or higher on five or more exams.

AP Capstone Diploma Program

The Advanced Placement Capstone diploma is awarded to students who successfully demonstrate research, critical thinking, and communication skills in their AP Research and AP Seminar courses. Students must earn a score of a 3 or higher in AP Research, AP Seminar, and four additional AP courses of their choice in order to receive the Capstone diploma. The AP Seminar and Research courses help students improve their critical thinking and communication skills.
In AP Seminar students learn to evaluate arguments and evidence from multiple perspectives. Students learn collaboration skills while working on a cumulative team project as well as an independent paper, presentation, and exam.
In AP Research students use research methods to investigate a topic of their choice and complete an independent research project. Upon completion of the research project, students present and defend an academic paper based on their research findings. There is no exam for this course. Credit for the course is based on the research project

Earning college credit by taking AP Courses

Students can earn 3 to 6 college credits for each AP course they take and earn a score of 3 or higher on the exam. AP credit policies vary by post-secondary institution.
