Small Group Instruction in PreK

  • This course is designed to provide teachers with the skills and strategies needed to teach productive, small group lessons. These lessons will provide children an opportunity to be actively engaged in activities from across the curriculum.

    Duration: 5 weeks
    Inservice: 30 points
    Audience: Instructional Pre-K

    Syllabus

    Week 1: Nursery Rhymes
    Week 2: Time to Rhyme (Phonological Awareness)
    Week 3: Makes Sense to Me (Science Activities)
    Week 4: Tell Me A Story (Story Retelling, Listening and Understanding, Speaking and Communication)
    Week 5: Tell Me A Math Story (Numbers and Operations, Geometry and Spatial Sense)

    Specific Objectives

    Participants will:

    • identify components of a small group lesson
    • name the Head Start Child Outcomes and Florida School Readiness Performance Standards that are addressed in each activity
    • demonstrate small group activities that span across different curriculum areas
    • explain the purpose of conducting lessons from different curriculum areas during small group time
    • list the skills addressed in a story retelling

    Implementation

    Evidence that cause content has been transferred to daily instruction might include:

    • increased student achievement on formal and informal assessments
    • changes in classroom environment
    • showing with colleagues at grade level and planning meetings

    Materials

    Materials normally found in a Pre-kindergarten classroom.

    Inservice

    • complete all assignments
    • participate each week in the Discussion Area
    • score at least 80% or higher on post test

    To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.

    Prerequisites

    Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course:

    • an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software
    • the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
    • the ability to download and install files from the Internet
    • an up-to-date antivirus software package
