ESE Requirement for Renewal

  • Beginning July 1, 2014, any applicant for renewal or reinstatement of a Florida professional certificate must earn at least (1) semester hour of college credit or the equivalent 20 inservice points of training in the instruction of students with disabilities (SWD). 

    If you have a total of 20 points from any of these courses listed on your inservice record, during your certification period, you have met the requirement for renewal. If not, there are three OPTIONS in Broward for completing these 20 points.

  • Option 1: Teaching Students with Disabilities

    Option 1: Teaching Students with Disabilities, a non-facilitated course, is available for 20 points to meet this requirement. The focus of this module is to provide educators with introductory information about the foundations of exceptional student education in Florida, the provision of services, and appropriate instructional practices for students with disabilities.

    Directions for registration are:

    • Go to www.fl-pda.org.
    • Scroll down to Independent Study Modules.
    • Click Sign In.
    • Click New User, Register here!
    • Select the module Teaching Students with Disabilities. Once you enter the module, you have 12 weeks to complete it. This is a 20 point course.

    Quarterly reports of completers are sent to districts.

  • Option 2: Effective Teaching Practices for SWD

    Option 2: Effective Teaching Practices for SWD

    Developed by the Florida Department of Education as an online experience, this independent study module is designed to provide a professional development opportunity for educators who want to enhance their skills in working with students with disabilities. This component is intended to be completed in its entirety.

    Directions for registration are:

    • Go to www.fl-pda.org.
    • Scroll down to Independent Study Modules.
    • Click Sign In.
    • Click New User, Register here!
    • Select the module Effective Teaching Practices. Once you enter the module, you have 12 weeks to complete it. This is a 20 point course.

    Quarterly reports of completers are sent to districts.

  • Option 3: Facilitated Online Courses

    Option 3: Facilitated Online Courses (Professional Development Alternatives) are also available for registration through My Learning Plan. For a list of PDA modules, click here. Most of these online modules will satisfy the SB1108 requirement.
