Word Walls In Action

  • This workshop is designed to focus on interactive word walls. Teachers will learn the theory behind the use of word walls in order to make the word wall an active part of their daily instruction. Teachers will implement a variety of activities into their whole group/small group lessons and literacy workstations that will empower students to increase their sight word vocabulary, and become independent readers and writers.

    Week 1: Theory Behind Word Walls
    Week 2: Quick Activities
    Week 3: 5-10 Minute Activities
    Week 4: Application to Daily Lessons

    Specific Objectives

    Participants will:

    • develop an interactive word wall based on students' needs
    • incorporate activities into daily instruction that provide students with the opportunity to increase their sight word vocabulary and become independent readers and writers
    • develop students' automaticity for fluent reading and writing through the daily use of word wall activities

    Implementation

    Evidence that course content has been transferred to daily instruction might include:

    • increased student achievement in the classroom
    • increased fluency with high frequency words

    In order to complete this course, you will need to obtain a copy of the required text:

    Inservice

    • complete all assignments
    • participate each week in the Discussion Area
    • score at least 80% or higher on post test

    To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.

    Prerequisites

    Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course:

    • an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software
    • the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
    • the ability to download and install files from the Internet
    • an up-to-date antivirus software package
