Guidance and Counseling for the Gifted

  • Guidance and Counseling for the Gifted is one of five courses needed to complete the gifted endorsement. Participants will study the theory and research for guidance and counseling for the gifted students. They will also determine the different characteristics and the affective needs of the gifted population. The knowledge of understanding the developmental theories will help the participants meet the needs of the gifted students.

    Week 1: Affective and cognitive needs of the gifted students
    Week 2: Social and emotional needs of gifted students
    Week 3: Special populations of gifted students
    Week 4: Risk factors facing gifted students
    Week 5: Skills and strategies for the teacher to use with gifted students
    Week 6: Characteristics of extroverts and introverts gifted students
    Week 7: Advocacy strategies to help gifted students
    Week 8: Career and future education for gifted students

    Specific Objectives

    Participants will:

    • identify the affective and cognitive needs of gifted students
    • determine the social and emotional needs of gifted students
    • recognize misconceptions, biases, and stereotypes affecting gifted students
    • explore the risk factors facing gifted students
    • identify the characteristics of gifted students as extrovert and introvert
    • learn educational, social and emotional strategies to help gifted students
    • provide career and future education for gifted students

    Materials

    Participants may need to obtain and view the movie "Little Man Tate", if they choose that assignment option in week 2.

    Inservice

    • complete all assignments
    • participate each week in the Discussion Area
    • score at least 80% or higher on post test

    To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.

    Prerequisites

    Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course:

    • an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software
    • the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
    • the ability to download and install files from the Internet
    • an up-to-date antivirus software package
