  • What is School Choice?

    The 2019/20 School Choice application window is December 1, 2018 – February 6, 2019.

During the School Choice application window, parents and guardians may submit three applications – one in each of the following application categories: magnet programs, Nova schools and school reassignments.  High-quality innovative programs, Career Technical Education (CTE) and Collegiate Academy options are also available by submitting a School Choice reassignment application.  There is something for everyone:

Magnet Programs offer in-depth experiences in specific areas of interest.  If you are interested in a magnet program at your assigned school, a School Choice application is not necessary.  Please contact your assigned school for information on how to participate.

The Nova Campus provides four schools on one campus for kindergarten through twelfth-grade students.

Reassignments allow attendance to a school that is not your assigned school.

Innovative Programs offer courses of study centered on specific themes.  If you are interested in an innovative program at your assigned school, a School Choice application is not necessary.  Please contact your assigned school for information on how to participate.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs prepare high school students for post-secondary enrollment and apprenticeships.  If you are interested in a CTE program at your assigned high school, a School Choice application is not necessary.  Please contact your assigned high school for information on how to participate.

Collegiate Academies offer high school students the opportunity to earn their high school diploma and their Associates in Arts degree.

The John M. McKay Scholarship provides educational options for parents of students with disabilities.  The 2019/20 application window for McKay begins May 1, 2019.

Please note:  A separate application is needed for each of the school choice application categories (magnet programs, Nova schools and school reassignments).

  • How do I apply?

If you are interested in an innovative program, magnet program, or Career Technical Education (CTE) program at your child’s assigned school, you do not need to submit a School Choice application.  Instead, contact the school for information on how to participate.

If you are interested in a program not available at your assigned school or if you would like your child to attend a school other than your assigned school, you may submit up to three applications for your child - a magnet program application, Nova Schools application and a reassignment application*.

The online 2019/20 School Choice application will be available beginning December 1, 2018 at 8 a.m.

*If you are interested in an Innovative Program or Career Technical Education (CTE) program not at your child’s assigned school or the Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy, you may apply for entry to that school through a School Choice reassignment application.

  • Can my child attend any school in Broward County?

By state law, students may apply to attend any public school in Florida that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine schools with available seats, BCPS reviews enrollment for all District schools annually to identify current available seats and projected students.

Parents may request a school that has available seats by completing a School Choice application during an open application window. School Choice applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the School Choice process, additional selections from the applicant pool are made.

Your child may always attend his or her assigned school, which is based on the primary home address.

  • What is my child’s assigned school?

School-aged children living within Broward County are assigned to a school based on their primary residential address and grade level. This is the child's assigned school. To find your child’s assigned school, please visit Find My Home School.
