  • CAT I - APPLIED LINGUISTICS

    Applied Linguistics satisfies one of five coursework requirements for Category 1 State ESOL Endorsement. This 8-week online course is designed as a comprehensive linguistic study of American English and factors which affect the instruction of English Language Learners (ELLs). Participants will be prepared to plan and implement instructional activities to meet the educational needs of ELLs and promote academic achievement for all students.  Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.

  • CAT I - CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION AND UNDERSTANDING

    Cross Cultural Communication and Understanding satisfies one of five coursework requirements for Category 1 State ESOL Endorsement. This 8-week online course is designed to prepare participants to plan and implement curriculum, instruction, and assessment activities to meet the educational needs of English Language Learners.  The course will promote awareness of linguistic and cultural issues of the district's diverse student population. Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.

  • CAT I - CURRICULUM & MATERIALS

    ESOL Curriculum & Materials Development satisfies one of five state course requirements for Category I ESOL Endorsement and is designed as an 8-week online study of instructional curricula and strategies for teachers of English Language Learners. Participants will identify and select various instructional materials to meet the educational needs of English Language Learners and promote academic achievement for all students.  Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.

  • CAT I - METHODS OF TEACHING ESOL

    This 8-week online course was developed to comply with the training requirements set forth by the Multicultural Education, Training and Advocacy, Inc. (META) Consent Decree for Category I teachers (English/Language Arts/Elementary Classroom Teachers) in order for them to add the ESOL Endorsement to their Florida State teaching certificate. This course will assist classroom teachers to better understand and meet the needs of English language learners.  Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.

Participants will learn about assessments, both formative and summative, which will meet the educational needs of English Language Learners and promote academic achievement for all students. Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.

  • CAT II - ESOL STRATEGIES FOR CONTENT AREA

    This 8-week online course prepares content area teachers to design, plan and implement instruction and assessments to meet the educational needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum. They will demonstrate knowledge of how a second language is acquired using various program models serving ELLs. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify procedures necessary to ensure the rights of ELLs, and apply current, research-based ESOL instructional strategies which integrate language and content, to meet academic and language proficiency needs of ELLs. Participants will develop lesson plans, alternative assessments, and activities that promote cross-cultural understanding.

  • CAT III - FOR STUDENT SERVICES PROVIDERS

    This 4-week online course prepares Student Service Providers (School Psychologists, Speech/Language Pathologists & Social Workers) to plan and implement strategies to meet the educational needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). Participants will interact with a facilitator and other participants online demonstrating knowledge of how a second language is acquired using various program models serving ELLs. Participants will demonstrate mastery by developing a final project relating to their job responsibilities, which applies course content learned and promotes cross-cultural understanding. In addition, participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.

  • CAT III - ISSUES & STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING

    This 8-week online course was developed to comply with the Multicultural Education, Training and Advocacy, Inc. (META) Consent Decree training requirements. The course was developed to assist school administrators and guidance counselors to better understand and meet the needs of English Language Learners, their families and teachers. Participants will demonstrate mastery by performing 80% or higher on a post-test, completing required assignments and readings, and communicating with a facilitator and other participants in a Discussion forum.
